The Fraumünster is a compact church right in the old town with one standout feature: the intense blue and green Chagall stained-glass windows in the choir. Expect a calm, dimly lit interior where most visitors spend 15-25 minutes looking up. The rest of the church is pleasant but plain Romanesque-Gothic architecture. It’s not overwhelming in scale, so it pairs easily with a walk around the river or a coffee nearby. If you’re short on time or not into churches, you can skip it without regret; the windows are the only real draw.
Best time to visit is May through September on a sunny morning when the light makes the glass glow. Expect to pay around CHF 8-15 for entry depending on whether you add the small audio guide or a temporary exhibition. Guided walking tours that include the church and a short boat cruise on the Limmat usually run CHF 35-55.
Honest tips: Go early to avoid the midday tour groups clustered under the windows. Skip the crypt unless you really like old stone foundations; it adds little. Combine it with the nearby Grossmünster for contrast – the views from its tower are the better payoff if you only have energy for one climb.
