Glacier Hiking from Reykjavik: Worth It?

From Reykjavik you can join day tours that combine a glacier hike with the South Coast drive, hitting waterfalls and black-sand beaches along the way. The actual hike lasts about 2–2.5 hours, with roughly 1.5 hours spent walking on the ice wearing crampons. Expect a mix of flat ice and some moderate inclines; guides will give you basic instruction and supply crampons, helmet, and harness. The scenery is stark and impressive—crevasses, ice ridges, and views toward mountains—but it’s a guided group activity, not wilderness solitude. Weather can change fast: wind, rain, or sudden fog are common even in summer.

Best time is June to early September when roads are open and daylight is longest. Shoulder months (May and late September) are cheaper but riskier for weather cancellations. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person for the full-day trip from Reykjavik, including transport, guide, and gear. Pick a smaller-group tour if you can; larger buses spend more time driving than on the ice. Skip it if you already plan multiple glacier walks elsewhere in Iceland or if you hate early starts—most tours leave before 8 a.m.
