These tours leave from the Old Harbour and typically last 1–3 hours. Expect cold wind, the boat bouncing around a bit, and decent chances of seeing puffins, guillemots, or the occasional whale if you're lucky. The puffin-focused RIB tours get you closer to the bird cliffs but are louder and wetter. Larger vessels are more stable and comfortable but keep you farther from wildlife. Views of the city and Mount Esja are nice on clear days; fog or rain can make it feel like you're just bobbing in gray water for a while.
Best time is May to mid-August when puffins are nesting and daylight is endless. June–July gives the highest wildlife odds and milder weather. Expect to pay around $60–$130 per person depending on boat type and duration. Shorter harbor sightseeing trips sit at the low end; the rigid inflatable puffin-and-whale safaris are at the higher end.
Tip: Choose the smaller RIB boat if you want puffins up close and don't mind wearing the provided gear; otherwise skip it and take the larger, calmer vessel to avoid seasickness and noise. Definitely skip the evening "midnight sun" cruises if it's overcast — there's no magic light show to justify the extra cost.
