A Golden Gate Bridge tour usually means either joining a bay cruise that passes right under it, renting a bike and crossing it yourself, or taking a guided van tour that stops at the viewpoints. On a cruise you get the classic postcard views from the water plus decent narration about the bridge's history and the city's earthquakes. Biking lets you actually walk on the bridge, feel the wind, and continue into Sausalito for lunch before catching a ferry back. Driving tours are the least engaging unless you hate crowds and want someone else fighting traffic. Expect to spend 1–4 hours depending on which option you pick; the bridge itself is often foggy even when the rest of the city is sunny.
Best time is late spring through early fall (May–October). Mornings tend to have clearer air before the famous afternoon fog rolls in. Summer weekends are busiest. Expect to pay around $40–$90 per person: cruises sit at the lower end, guided bike tours in the middle, and private driving tours at the higher end. Add another $15–30 if you want the ferry ride back from Sausalito.
Pick the bike tour if you're reasonably fit and want the full experience; skip the big bus tours that only stop for photos at crowded overlooks. Bring layers no matter what; it’s always colder and windier on the bridge than you think.
