Should You Visit Alcatraz Island?

Alcatraz is one of those things most visitors feel they "should" do in San Francisco. The boat ride across the bay is short but can be cold and choppy. Once on the island you'll climb a steep hill to the cellhouse where a first-rate audio tour walks you through the prison's history, famous inmates, and escape attempts. Expect wind, fog, and a lot of stairs. The views of the city skyline are excellent on clear days, but the experience is more somber history lesson than thrill ride. Plan on 2.5–3.5 hours total including ferry time.

The best time to go is spring or fall when the bay is slightly less foggy and crowds are thinner than summer. Winter can be rainy and rough on the water but you'll often get tickets more easily. Expect to pay around $45–$65 per adult including the ferry and audio tour; kids and seniors pay less. Book at least a month ahead in summer, two weeks otherwise.

Take the earliest ferry you can get if you want quieter photos and fewer people in the cellhouse. Skip the night tour unless you're really into spooky vibes; the daytime version is plenty. Combine it with a walk along the waterfront afterward rather than trying to cram it into a packed sightseeing day.
