Expect a pleasant, mostly flat 6–8 mile ride on decent paved paths that take you past open meadows, forests, a few museums, and the famous bison paddock. The park feels surprisingly big once you’re inside it. Wind can pick up near the western end by the ocean, and weekends get crowded with families, joggers, and skaters, especially around Stow Lake and the Conservatory of Flowers. It’s an easy, low-stress ride compared to most of the city, but it’s still very much in an urban park rather than wilderness.
Best time is spring or early fall on a weekday morning. Summer fog can make it cold and gray until mid-afternoon, and weekends feel chaotic. Expect to pay around $35–55 for a half-day bike rental including a basic helmet and lock. Guided group tours usually run $70–110 per person. Skip the organized tours unless you really want narration; renting a bike on your own gives you freedom to stop where you want and ride at your own pace. Definitely ride all the way out to Ocean Beach if the weather is decent — that stretch feels completely different from the eastern side of the park.
