The Grand Palace is Bangkok's biggest tourist draw for good reason. Expect a sprawling complex of gilded temples, intricate mosaics, and the famous Emerald Buddha. It's crowded, hot, and you'll do a lot of walking on marble that gets scorching by midday. The dress code is strict - no shorts, sleeveless tops, or flip-flops (they sell or rent cover-ups if needed). The whole visit usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It's impressive but can feel like a checklist item once the novelty wears off, especially in 35°C heat with thousands of other visitors.
Best time to visit is November to February when it's cooler and drier. Go early - gates open at 8:30 AM and the first two hours are noticeably less chaotic. Expect to pay around $15-35 depending on whether you just buy entry or add a decent guided tour that actually explains what you're looking at. Skip the big group tours that rush you through; they're exhausting.
Honest tip: Combine it with Wat Pho (the Reclining Buddha temple) which is right next door and far more peaceful. Buy tickets at the official gate rather than from the touts outside. If it's peak season and you're not a temple person, consider just viewing it from outside the walls - the exterior is already quite spectacular.
