Bangkok Massage: What to Expect

A proper Bangkok massage is usually firm, thorough, and nothing like the limp Western version. Expect to be stretched, walked on, and elbowed in ways that feel both painful and amazing. Thai massage is done fully clothed on a mat; oil massages are more like classic Western ones but often stronger. Sessions typically last 60-120 minutes. The better places are clean, use fresh towels, and have actual trained therapists. You'll leave loose but possibly a bit sore the next day. It's one of the best things you can do after a long flight or tough travel days.

Best time is November to February when it's cooler and less humid. Expect to pay around 400-900 THB for a solid 60-90 minute session in a reputable spot; 1200-2000 THB gets you nicer facilities, better therapists, and extras like herbal compress or foot massage add-ons. Skip the rock-bottom tourist-street shops that look too cheap or pushy. Pick traditional Thai or aromatherapy from mid-range spas in Sukhumvit or Silom. Book ahead on weekends. Tell them your pressure preference immediately (most default to strong). A good tip: go in the morning when therapists are fresh.
