A day trip to the Greek islands from Athens is exactly what it sounds like: you board a boat early in the morning and return in the evening. Most trips head to Hydra, Poros, and Aegina in the Saronic Gulf. Expect calm water on a good day, plenty of fellow passengers, and a schedule that keeps you moving. You’ll get a few hours on one or two islands—enough for a swim, a quick meal, and some photos—but it’s not the relaxed island-hopping fantasy you see in postcards. The boat ride itself is about 1.5–2 hours each way depending on which islands are on the route.
The best time is late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–early October). Seas are usually calmer, temperatures are pleasant, and crowds are lighter than July and August. In high summer the boats get packed, the islands are jammed, and the heat makes the whole experience tiring. Expect to pay around €120–€180 per person. That typically covers the boat, a basic lunch, and sometimes a short guided walk; drinks and any extras are on top. Private tours or smaller boats cost noticeably more.
Pick Hydra if you only have one choice—it’s the most atmospheric and car-free. Skip trying to see three islands properly in one day; you end up spending more time on the boat than on land. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and realistic expectations. It’s a solid introduction to the islands if your time in Greece is limited, but it’s a long day and not a substitute for staying on an island overnight.
