Guadalupe River Trail Bike Guide

The Guadalupe River Trail is a paved, mostly flat 10-mile path that follows the river from central San Jose south toward Almaden. Expect a mix of urban views, park sections, and some pleasant tree cover. It’s popular with locals walking dogs, running, and commuting, so you’ll share the path. The surface is smooth enough for any bike, but it can feel exposed on hot days and gets crowded on weekends. The ride itself is easy and straightforward; it’s more transport than epic adventure, but it’s a solid way to see a different side of the city without dealing with traffic.

Best time to ride is spring or fall. Summers are brutally hot and the trail has almost no shade for long stretches. Winters are mild but can be damp after rain when the river runs high. Expect to pay around $25–45 for a half-day bike rental including helmet and lock if you don’t bring your own. Guided group rides, when available, usually add another $30–60 on top.

Pick the southern section near Almaden if you want quieter scenery and fewer pedestrians; skip trying to ride all the way to the airport area unless you enjoy industrial views and heavy traffic noise. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen regardless of season—the path offers few services once you leave the downtown end.
