River Park Bike Ride in San Jose

This is a flat, paved trail ride along the Guadalupe River that runs through the middle of San Jose. Expect a mix of leafy green sections, views of downtown buildings, and occasional underpasses. The route is mostly car-free but you’ll share it with joggers, families, and the odd e-scooter. The full out-and-back from near the airport to the Children’s Discovery Museum and back is about 12–15 miles and takes 1.5–3 hours depending on how often you stop. It’s genuinely pleasant on a clear day but not wilderness—urban sounds and freeway noise are part of the experience.

Best time is spring (March–May) or fall (September–October) when temperatures are mild and the river actually has some water. Summer can be brutally hot and the trail gets crowded on weekends. Expect to pay around $45–75 for a half-day bike rental plus guided ride; self-guided rentals start closer to $25–40 for the day. Guided tours usually include helmet, water, and a quick safety briefing.

Tip: go early in the morning before the heat and crowds build. Skip the guided “wine tasting” add-ons—they’re rushed and not worth it. Bring your own snacks and a phone mount if you want decent photos; the best views are near the Japanese Friendship Garden stretch.
