Expect warm, humid trails through secondary forest and coffee plantations with some decent views but nothing like the dramatic cloud forests further afield. Most excursions from San Jose are half-day to full-day trips involving 45 minutes to two hours of driving each way. You'll see birds, maybe some monkeys or sloths if you're lucky, and get a decent workout on moderate trails with a few steep sections. Trails are generally well-maintained but can be muddy after rain.
The dry season (December to April) is easiest for hiking, with less mud and fewer mosquitoes. May and June can still be good before the heavy rains hit; avoid September and October unless you like constant downpours and slippery conditions. Expect to pay around $80–$180 per person depending on whether it's a simple guided half-day hike or a longer trip with transport, lunch and park fees included. Private tours or ones with hotel pickup push toward the higher end.
Pick the closer options like trails in the hills just outside the city if you want to maximize hiking time and minimize bus time. Skip anything advertised as a "rainforest adventure" that actually goes to a park several hours away—you're better off saving that for a dedicated trip to Monteverde or Manuel Antonio. Bring good rain gear and insect repellent regardless of forecast; it can change fast.
