A helicopter flight gives you the single best overview of Mauritius in 15–45 minutes. You’ll see the dramatic switch from sugar cane fields to volcanic mountains, turquoise lagoons, and the reef drop-off that you simply can’t appreciate from the ground. Expect some noise and vibration; it’s not a silent drone ride. Most flights depart from either Grand Baie in the north or from the airport area. The standard routes cover the west coast, Le Morne, Chamarel, and the Black River Gorges. Longer flights add the east coast and Ile aux Cerfs. Turbulence is common over the mountains in the afternoon, so smooth air is more likely in the morning.
The best season is May to October (dryer, less cloud). December to March can still be good but rain and cumulus build-up often cancel or shorten flights. Expect to pay around $250–$450 per person for a 20–30 minute shared flight and $900–$1,800 for a private 30–45 minute experience. Private is noticeably better because you control the routing and seating.
Tip: book a private morning flight that includes the southwest coast and Le Morne; it’s the most scenic leg and worth the extra money. Skip the short “sunset” shared flights — the light is often flat, the aircraft is full, and you spend half the time repositioning other passengers. If your budget is tight, a good drone or a speedboat trip to the lagoon will give you more time on the water for less cash.
