Highgate Cemetery splits into two halves. The East side is open for self-guided wandering among ivy-covered graves and famous names like Karl Marx. The West side is denser, older, and more atmospheric with its Egyptian Avenue and Circle of Lebanon, but you can only enter on a guided tour. Expect a 45-60 minute walk with a guide who knows the history, graves, and eccentric stories. It’s interesting rather than thrilling — more peaceful than spooky during daylight. The whole visit takes 1.5-2 hours including both sides.
Best time is spring or early autumn on a weekday morning; summer weekends get crowded and the paths can feel like a procession. Avoid winter if you dislike mud and short days. Expect to pay around £15-25 per person for the guided West tour (which includes East access). Solo travelers and couples usually find it good value; families with young kids may find it dull.
Tip: book the earliest tour you can — the cemetery feels quieter and the light is better for photos. Skip the East-only ticket if it’s your first visit; the guided West tour is the part most people remember. Wear sturdy shoes; the paths are uneven and often wet.
