Is the London Mail Rail Worth It?

The Mail Rail experience is a 15-minute ride on a tiny, narrow-gauge underground train that once carried post across London. You’ll descend into the original tunnels, see the old platforms and track, then loop through a section of the network while a recorded commentary explains how it worked from the 1920s until 2003. It’s paired with a visit to the Postal Museum, which covers postal history with real artefacts and hands-on exhibits. Expect a mix of history lesson and short theme-park-style ride; it’s genuinely interesting if you like transport or industrial history, but it’s not a thrill ride. The tunnels are cool and slightly damp, the train is compact (think very small carriages), and the whole visit takes 1.5–2 hours.

Best time is midweek in spring or autumn to avoid school groups. Summer and weekends get noticeably busier. Expect to pay around £25–£35 per adult including both museum and ride; kids and family tickets bring the per-person cost down. Book ahead, especially for the timed rail slots.

Tip: pick the standard Mail Rail + museum ticket and do the museum first so the historical context makes the ride more interesting. Skip the add-on audio guide if you’re short on time; the on-train commentary and museum panels are enough. Wear comfortable shoes; there’s quite a bit of walking and some stairs.
