Hiking Dragon's Back in Hong Kong: Honest Guide

Dragon's Back is a moderate 5–6 km ridge hike on Hong Kong Island that gives you sweeping views over the South China Sea, forested valleys, and beaches. Expect a steady climb at the start, then a fun, undulating ridge walk with almost constant sea views. The trail finishes with a descent to Big Wave Bay where most people swim or grab a cold drink. The whole experience usually takes 4–6 hours including transport and breaks. It's not empty — it's popular for good reason — but the views make up for the company. The path is well-maintained and clearly marked, so it's suitable for anyone with a reasonable fitness level.

Best time is October to early April when it's cooler and drier. Avoid summer (June–September) unless you love sweating heavily and hiking in thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $110–180 USD for a guided half-day group tour that includes pickup from central areas, a guide, and water. Independent hikers pay almost nothing beyond bus fare (under $10 round-trip from the city).

Smart choice: book a small-group morning tour that starts early enough to beat the worst heat and crowds. Skip the full-day versions that add extra stops — the ridge itself is the highlight. Bring your own snacks, plenty of water, and good grip shoes. The ridge can be surprisingly windy, so don't underestimate it even though the trail looks easy on photos.
