Lantau Island Hike: What You Need to Know

Lantau offers a completely different side of Hong Kong: real hills, forest trails, and far fewer people than the concrete jungle. The classic Lantau Trail is a 70 km loop split into 12 stages, but most visitors pick one or two sections rather than the full thing. Expect steep climbs, stone steps that destroy your knees on the way down, and rewarding views over the sea and mountains. The most popular stretch takes you past the giant Buddha and up to Lantau Peak – it's tough but doable for anyone with decent fitness. You'll also find quieter coastal paths and the chance to end at the stilt houses of Tai O fishing village.

The best time is November to March when the humidity drops and temperatures stay comfortable. Avoid summer unless you love sweating through your shirt in 90% humidity. Expect to pay around HK$150–350 total for the day: ferry or bus from central Hong Kong, a simple lunch, and maybe a drink or two. Guided day hikes with transport included sit at the higher end of that range.

Honest tip: do the Sunset Peak or Lantau Peak section if you want proper hiking, but skip the crowded Big Buddha path on weekends – it feels more like a theme park than nature. Bring plenty of water, wear proper shoes, and don't underestimate the climbs. Finish in Mui Wo for a cold beer by the water.
