Is a Hong Kong Tram Tour Worth It?

Expect a slow, breezy ride through the heart of Hong Kong Island on double-decker trams that feel like mobile viewing platforms. The sightseeing version uses an open-top vintage-style tram that crawls along the northern corridor from Causeway Bay to Western District, giving you decent views of skyscrapers, street-level chaos, markets, and neon signs. It's genuinely local transport mixed with a tourist spin—wind in your hair, decent photo ops, but also traffic jams, occasional rain, and the constant clang of the bell. The regular tram network is even better for casual sightseeing if you just hop on and off with an Octopus card.

Best time is October to early March when the humidity drops and temperatures stay comfortable for sitting upstairs with the windows open. Avoid summer unless you like sauna-like conditions. Expect to pay around HK$150–300 per person depending on whether you do a guided vintage tram tour or simply buy a 1- or 2-day unlimited pass for the regular fleet. The unlimited pass is usually the smarter buy if you plan to ride more than twice.

Tip: Skip the heavily promoted open-top “tram tour” if you're short on time or on a budget—it's cute but overpriced for what it is. Instead grab an unlimited day pass and ride the regular double-deckers yourself, sitting upstairs at the front for the best views. Go in the late afternoon so you catch daylight views then watch the city light up at dusk.
