Hiking Trails in San Jose: What to Know

San Jose’s popular trails are mostly flat, paved paths that follow creeks and rivers rather than rugged mountain hikes. Expect a pleasant, easy walk with some shade from trees, occasional views of water, and a mix of locals jogging, biking, or pushing strollers. Los Gatos Creek Trail offers the nicest scenery and longest continuous stretch; Coyote Creek and Guadalupe River trails feel more urban but still get you outside. You’ll share the route with cyclists, so stay alert. Most people finish 3–6 miles in a couple of hours without getting exhausted.

Best time is spring (March–May) when hills are green and temperatures are mild. Early mornings beat the afternoon heat year-round; summers get hot and dry, while winter can bring rain and muddy sections. Expect to pay around $0–15 total—parking is usually free or $5–10 at trailheads, and you don’t need any permits or guides for these paths.

Pick Los Gatos Creek if you want the most pleasant experience with decent nature. Skip full-day plans in July or August unless you enjoy hiking in 90-degree heat. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and check for any temporary closures after heavy rain.
