The Hobbiton tour takes you to the actual movie set built on a working sheep farm about 2.5 hours southeast of Auckland. A guide walks your group through the 12-acre site showing hobbit holes, gardens, the mill, and the Green Dragon Inn. The scenery is genuinely pretty and the set feels convincingly real up close, but it's very much a film-set visit rather than an immersive Middle-earth experience. Expect 30-40 minutes on site plus travel time; the full round-trip from Auckland runs 8-10 hours. It's popular with Lord of the Rings fans but can feel crowded and a bit theme-park-ish if you're not into the films.
Best time is November to April when the weather is most reliable and the gardens look their best; avoid winter if you dislike cold wind and mud. Expect to pay around NZ$250-380 per person including transport from Auckland; cheaper if you drive yourself and just buy the site ticket. Small-group tours are noticeably better than the big buses.
Pick the standard guided tour and skip any add-on banquet unless you really want an overpriced meal in costume. Bring a wide-angle lens or phone with good panorama mode; the elevated views across the holes are the photos worth taking. If you're short on time or only mildly curious about the movies, you can comfortably skip it.
