Hout Bay Seal Island Boat Trips

The boat trip from Hout Bay harbour to Seal Island takes about 45 minutes each way and circles a rocky outcrop covered in thousands of Cape fur seals. You’ll smell them before you see them. The water is often choppy, especially on the way back, and the boats are open, so expect spray. The main attraction is the seals themselves plus the chance of seeing great white sharks near the island, though shark sightings are never guaranteed and have become less common in recent years. The whole excursion usually lasts 2 to 2.5 hours including harbour time. It’s a working harbour trip rather than a luxury cruise – simple, a bit rough around the edges, and genuinely interesting if you like wildlife.

Best time to go is November to April when the sea is usually calmer and visibility is better. Expect to pay around R800–R1300 per adult depending on the operator and whether you choose a small boat or the larger catamaran. Kids are roughly half price. Book a morning departure if possible; the light is better and the wind tends to be lighter.

Honest tip: choose the smaller, faster boats if you want a closer view of the island and don’t mind getting wet. Skip the sunset trips – the seals are less active and you’re more exposed to the afternoon wind. Bring a rain jacket or windbreaker even if the day is sunny; it gets cold on the water fast.
