Independence Palace: Worth Visiting?

The palace is a mid-20th century time capsule that housed South Vietnam's presidents until 1975. Expect a large, somewhat faded building with preserved meeting rooms, a bunker basement, tanks and a helicopter on the lawn, and a rooftop helipad. Most visitors spend 45-90 minutes walking through at their own pace with an audio guide or basic map. It's more interesting for history buffs than casual tourists - you'll see where major decisions were made and the famous tank-gate-crashing spot from the war's end. Crowds are moderate but it can feel stuffy inside on hot days.

Best time to visit is early morning (opens around 7:30-8am) during the dry season (December to April) when it's cooler. Expect to pay around 40,000-100,000 VND for a standard foreign adult ticket depending on what's included; combo tickets with the War Remnants Museum or a short walking tour push it higher. Skip the official guided group tour if you're short on time - the self-guided route with the free audio app works fine. Do go up to the roof for photos and down to the basement tunnels; those are the most memorable parts.
