Island Hopping in the Maldives: What to Know

Island hopping lets you visit several inhabited local islands and a few uninhabited ones over a few days instead of staying put at one resort. Expect a mix of speedboat transfers, basic guesthouses or small hotels on local islands, snorkeling stops at house reefs or channels, and meals that are usually simple Maldivian fare (fish, rice, coconut). The pace is relaxed but you will spend a fair bit of time on boats. Water is usually clear and the marine life decent, though it’s not as pristine as remote atolls. It’s a good middle-ground if you want to see more than one island without the full private yacht price tag.

Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and weather is mostly dry. May to November brings cheaper rates but rougher crossings, more rain, and reduced visibility. Expect to pay around $180–350 per person per day for a multi-day trip that includes boat transfers, basic accommodation, meals, and snorkeling gear. Cheaper options use bigger groups and local islands; higher figures get you smaller boats or better food and fewer people.

Pick trips that stay within one atoll to avoid wasting hours on long transfers. Skip the ones that cram in too many islands per day – you’ll just end up tired and seasick. Bring motion sickness tablets if you’re even slightly prone; the channels between atolls can get choppy fast.
