A Marietas Islands tour is basically a full-day boat trip (about 8–10 hours) from Puerto Vallarta to a small protected archipelago an hour or so north. You’ll spend most of the day on the water with two main stops: snorkeling in decent but not mind-blowing reefs, then a visit to the famous Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor) if the tide and park rangers allow it. The boat ride can be bumpy, especially in the afternoons, and the Hidden Beach itself is small, crowded, and you usually only get 30–45 minutes there. The scenery is dramatic—rocky islands, sea caves, and lots of birds—but it’s a very packaged experience with 20–40 other people on similar boats.
Best time is November through April when the water is calmer and visibility is better. Summer and early fall bring bigger swells that can cancel trips or make the ride miserable. Expect to pay around $90–$160 per person depending on whether you go with a basic shared boat or a smaller group tour that includes better food, gear, and fewer people. National park fees are usually rolled in.
Tip: book the earliest departure you can find; it gets you to the beach before the crowds pile up and gives you a better shot at actually landing. Skip the photos-with-dolphins upsells and any tour that promises guaranteed Hidden Beach access—nothing is guaranteed. Bring your own snacks and reef-safe sunscreen; the included lunch is usually forgettable.
