A jungle river cruise takes you upriver from Puerto Vallarta into the coastal jungle by small boat. Expect about three to four hours total: slow cruising through mangroves and forest, a few short stops to swim in freshwater pools or walk easy trails, and usually a basic lunch of grilled fish, rice, and beer. Wildlife sightings are common but not guaranteed—iguanas, herons, and the occasional crocodile. It's relaxing rather than thrilling, with plenty of time floating and chatting. The boats are basic covered pangas that hold 8–20 people. It's a solid half-day nature escape if you want something calmer than zip-lining or ATVs.
Best time is November through April when it's drier and cooler. Summer and early fall bring heavy rain, higher river levels, more bugs, and occasional tour cancellations. Expect to pay around $65–$110 per person depending on group size, inclusions, and whether you go with a smaller or larger operator. Private tours sit at the higher end.
Pick the morning departure—it’s cooler and animals are more active. Skip the add-on “jungle hike” if you only want the river; many of those are short, muddy, and not worth the extra sweat. Bring bug spray, reef-safe sunscreen, and a dry bag for your phone.
