The Jet d'Eau is Geneva's signature landmark: a single powerful column of water shooting 140 meters straight up from Lake Geneva. Expect a simple, impressive sight rather than a full-day attraction. You can view it easily from multiple spots along the lakeside promenade, Quai Gustave-Ador, or from across the water in the old town. The surrounding park areas are pleasant for a stroll, but the fountain itself is the main event. On windy days the spray can drench nearby paths, so keep that in mind if you're dressed up.
Summer (June to September) is the best time because the fountain runs daily from around 10am until late evening. In shoulder seasons and winter it often operates shorter hours or stops completely. Expect to pay around $0-15 total: it's completely free to view from the shore, while a short boat cruise that gets you closer to the plume usually falls in the $12-25 range depending on the operator and whether you combine it with other lake stops.
Best tip: skip the overpriced lakeside cafés right next to it and walk ten minutes to the quieter parks for the same view with fewer crowds. If you're short on time, just admire it from the bridge or waterfront path instead of paying for a boat - the scale looks more dramatic from a distance anyway.
