A jimjilbang is a 24-hour Korean bathhouse and sauna complex. Expect separate men’s and women’s bathing areas with hot pools, cold plunges, and scrub stations, plus a large mixed-gender lounge with heated floors, different-temperature saunas (salt, charcoal, infrared), snack bars, and people napping on mats. It’s very local – you’ll see families, couples, and office workers unwinding. First-timers usually feel awkward for the first 30 minutes, then realize nobody is judging. Bring nothing; they provide shorts and T-shirts for the common areas, towels, and toiletries. Bathing is nude in the gender-separated sections.
Best time is autumn or winter when the heated floors feel amazing, but they’re open year-round and less crowded on weekday afternoons. Expect to pay around $12–25 for basic entry and access for 4–6 hours; add $5–10 if you want a professional body scrub or massage. Food and drinks inside are cheap.
Pick a large, modern place with good reviews for cleanliness. Get the full body scrub once – it’s rough but leaves your skin smoother than you thought possible. Skip the overpriced “premium” saunas and the midnight fried chicken unless you’re genuinely hungry. Go with a friend or solo; both work fine.
