Seoul Jjimjilbang: What It's Really Like

A jjimjilbang is a 24-hour Korean bathhouse and sauna complex. You pay once at the entrance, get a uniform and locker key, then spend as long as you want moving between hot pools, saunas of different temperatures, cold plunges, and the large heated resting halls. Expect to see plenty of naked Koreans of the same gender in the bathing area; it's completely normal and non-sexual. The dry saunas often have different themes (infrared, salt, jade) and the common areas have TVs, snack bars selling eggs, beer, and instant noodles. Most first-timers feel awkward for about 20 minutes then realize nobody is paying attention to them.

Best time is autumn or winter when the contrast between hot saunas and cold outside feels perfect; avoid summer weekends if you dislike crowds. Expect to pay around $12–25 for basic entry including uniform and towel; massages, scrubs, or private sleeping rooms cost extra and can easily double the total. Go late afternoon or evening and stay through the night if you want the full experience.

Pick the mugwort or salt sauna and try the cold plunge at least once. Skip the overpriced “premium” massage packages on your first visit; they’re not worth it unless you know you like that style. Bring your own underwear or buy disposable ones there; most people just sleep in the provided uniform in the common areas.
