Jiufen Old Street Day Trip from Taipei

Jiufen is a former gold-mining town in the hills above the northeast coast that has become one of the most popular day trips from Taipei. Expect steep, crowded alleyways lined with teahouses, snack stalls, and souvenir shops. The views over the mountains and ocean are genuinely beautiful on a clear day, but the old-street experience itself is very touristy—think Instagram crowds, lots of pineapple cakes and taro balls, and a somewhat theme-park atmosphere. Most people combine it with nearby Shifen (sky lanterns) or Yehliu Geopark in a single long day. It’s doable as a half-day on your own via bus, but the return journey can feel tiring.

Best time is weekday mornings in spring or autumn; summer is hot and wet, winter can be misty and cold but the crowds thin out. Expect to pay around NT$800–1,500 per person for the whole day including transport, food, and a few small admissions or a shared taxi/private driver. Public buses are cheapest but slowest.

Honest tips: Pick up a bowl of traditional taro or sweet potato soup and sit on a terrace with a view—that’s the part worth savoring. Skip the overpriced “gold” jewelry and most souvenir shops unless you actually want kitsch. If you’re short on time or hate crowds, consider skipping Jiufen entirely and heading straight to quieter spots along the same coast.
