Elephant Mountain Sunset Hike, Taipei

The Elephant Mountain trail is a steep but short flight of concrete stairs that takes 15–25 minutes to climb. At the top you get sweeping views over Taipei 101 and the whole city basin. Sunset is the main event — the platform fills up with locals and tourists waiting for the lights to come on. Expect a mix of serious photographers with tripods and people taking selfies. The trail itself is well-maintained but has almost no shade, so it gets hot and humid in summer. It’s genuinely steep in sections; if you have bad knees you’ll feel it on the way down.

Best time is October to early April on a clear day. Avoid summer if you hate sweating. The hike itself is free. Expect to pay around NT$150–350 total per person including the MRT ride there and back, a cold drink at the top, and maybe a simple dinner nearby. Go late afternoon (around 4 pm) so you’re not rushing. Skip the overcrowded main viewing deck at peak sunset if you want a quieter spot — there are a couple of smaller platforms further along the ridge that are often less packed. Bring water, wear proper shoes, and don’t count on this being a peaceful nature escape. It’s a quick, rewarding city view with a workout attached.
