Geopark and Waterfall Day Tour from Taipei

Expect a long but satisfying day that mixes weird rock formations at Yehliu Geopark, a quick stop at the photogenic Golden Waterfall, a short walk to Shifen Waterfall, and a couple of hours wandering Jiufen’s old streets. The geopark is genuinely strange and worth seeing once; the waterfalls are pretty but not spectacular compared to what you’ll find deeper in Taiwan’s mountains. Traffic can be heavy, so most days involve 8–10 hours door-to-door with decent walking on uneven paths. It’s a solid introduction to northeast Taiwan’s scenery if you only have one day outside the city.

Best time is October to early April when the northeast gets cooler, clearer weather and fewer weekend crowds. Summer is hot, humid, and often rainy, which makes the geopark slippery and Jiufen miserable. Expect to pay around US$35–65 per person for a shared van tour including transport and a basic guide; private tours or smaller groups run US$170–220. Entry fees are minimal or included.

Honest tip: prioritize Yehliu Geopark and Golden Waterfall, then choose either Shifen or Jiufen depending on your energy—doing both in one afternoon usually feels rushed. Skip the lantern-releasing activity at Shifen; it’s touristy, expensive, and environmentally questionable. Wear good walking shoes and bring a light jacket even in summer—the northeast coast can be surprisingly windy.
