Should You Do the Yehliu-Jiufen-Pingxi Day Tour?

This is a long but doable 9-hour day trip that hits three very different places north of Taipei. You start at Yehliu Geopark with its weird eroded rock formations (Queen’s Head is the star, but the whole area is interesting for 45–60 minutes). Then you head to Jiufen, the old mountain village with narrow alleyways, red lanterns, and teahouses stacked on the hillside. Most people like the atmosphere more than the slightly touristy shops. You finish in Pingxi, where you can release a sky lantern, walk the old railway tracks, and visit Shifen waterfall if time allows. It’s a packed day with a lot of bus time, but you see a good mix of geological oddities, old Taiwan mountain culture, and a bit of countryside.

Best time is spring or autumn (March–May or October–November) when it’s cooler and less humid. Summers are hot, crowded, and rainy; winter can be damp and misty, which actually looks atmospheric in Jiufen but gets cold. Expect to pay around $80–110 per person for a small-group tour with hotel pickup. Private tours run $180–280 depending on group size. Food and sky lanterns are extra (budget another $15–25).

Smart tip: Skip the overpriced tea shops in Jiufen and just get a peanut ice cream roll or taro ball dessert instead. In Pingxi, releasing one lantern together is enough — more feels wasteful. If you hate tight schedules and long bus rides, consider doing Jiufen on your own by bus instead. Otherwise this tour is an efficient way to knock out three places most people want to see.
