Shifen Waterfall & Sky Lantern Guide

The Shifen experience combines a short visit to a pretty waterfall with the sky lantern ritual in the old Pingxi railway town. Expect a modest but attractive 40-meter waterfall that takes 15-20 minutes to walk around, followed by the lantern activity on the train tracks where you write wishes and release paper lanterns into the sky. It’s touristy—especially on weekends—but the lantern moment feels genuinely fun and photogenic if you’re into that kind of thing. The whole area is easy to walk and feels like a half-day escape from Taipei rather than a major natural wonder.

Best time is spring or autumn on a weekday morning. Summers are hot and crowded, winter can be rainy and gray which kills the lantern photos. Expect to pay around $15–45 per person depending on whether you take public transport and do it independently or join a small group tour that includes transport from Taipei. Add a bit more if you want a private driver.

Honest tips: Skip the overpriced shops selling lanterns right on the main track and walk 50 meters further to quieter spots with fewer people. Pick the smaller 2- or 3-color lanterns instead of the giant ones—they fly better and look less tacky in photos. If you only have one day outside Taipei, combine it with Jiufen; if you want something peaceful, just do Shifen on its own.
