Lake Zurich is a solid choice if you want a relaxed paddle with real Alpine views. Expect glassy water in the morning, steep green hills on one side, and the city skyline fading behind you. Most outings last 2-3 hours; you'll cover the lower lake at an easy pace. It's rarely crowded once you're 500m from shore. Water is clean but cold (even in summer it's around 20°C), and the wind can pick up quickly in the afternoon, turning a calm paddle into a workout.
Best time is June to early September. Late spring and early autumn are possible but colder and windier. Go in the morning if you can; the lake is noticeably smoother before noon. Expect to pay around CHF 80-130 per person for a guided half-day trip that includes all gear, basic instruction, and transport back to the start. Solo kayak rentals are cheaper if you already know what you're doing.
Tip: book a small-group guided tour if it's your first time on the lake; the guides know exactly where the afternoon wind starts blowing from and will keep the outing relaxed. Skip the big sunset "party kayak" events unless you enjoy loud music and drinking while paddling; they're more social than scenic.
