Expect cold, clear water surrounded by serious mountains. Most trips are on Lake Wakatipu or the gentler sections of the Dart River. The classic outing is a half-day paddle with some guided instruction, scenery staring, and a jet-boat return that’s louder than you expect. Full-day versions add more paddling and a picnic. It’s genuinely beautiful but not wilderness solitude – you’ll share the water with other boats and tour groups. Water is cold year-round; you’ll wear a wetsuit or dry top even in summer.
Best time is December to March when the days are longest and air temperature is tolerable. Shoulder seasons (Oct-Nov and April) are quieter and cheaper but can be chilly and windy. Avoid mid-winter unless you specifically want to paddle in snow. Expect to pay around NZ$150–280 for a half-day trip and NZ$350–450 for a full day including transport and food. Prices rise in peak summer.
Pick the Dart River combo if you want the mountain scenery and the fun jet-boat ride back; it’s the one most people remember. Skip the generic “sunset lake paddle” unless you just want a relaxed float with a drink – it’s pretty but feels more like a tourist checklist. Bring your own sunglasses and a dry bag; the provided gear is fine but not fancy.
