Kayaking in Rio de Janeiro: Worth It?

Expect a mix of postcard views and real-world Rio chaos. Most trips paddle Guanabara Bay from Urca, gliding past Sugarloaf Mountain, skirting Flamengo Beach, and weaving around small islands. The water is usually calm in the morning but can get choppy with wind or boat traffic. You'll see flying fish, maybe a few dolphins, and incredible city-mountain backdrops, but also tankers, plastic trash, and the smell of the bay on warmer days. Tours last about four hours including a short break on a beach or island. It's moderately active; you don't need to be an athlete but you will use your arms.

Best time is May to September when it's drier, slightly cooler, and the bay tends to be flatter. Summer (Dec-Mar) brings heat, rain, and more frequent cancellations. Expect to pay around $60-110 per person for a guided half-day trip with equipment and a small group. Private or longer outings push toward the higher end.

Pick a morning departure from Urca to avoid the strongest sun and worst boat traffic. Skip anything promising "hidden paradises" or full-day excursions unless you're very fit; the bay gets tiring and the novelty wears off after a few hours. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a dry bag; wear quick-dry clothes you don't mind getting salty.
