Hang Gliding in Rio: What You Need to Know

Expect a 15-20 minute flight launching from a mountain ramp above Rio, gliding over rainforest-covered slopes before soaring along the coastline with views of Pedra da Gávea, the beaches, and the city below. Tandem pilots handle everything; you just run off the ramp with them (it feels surprisingly normal after the first two seconds), then sit back and steer a bit if they let you. The ride up through the forest is bumpy and part of the adventure. Landings are usually soft on the sand at São Conrado beach. It's genuinely spectacular on a clear day but can feel short if you're hoping for an hour in the air.

Best time is the dry season from May to October, especially June-August when winds are most predictable and skies are clearer. Avoid December-February if you hate humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Expect to pay around $200-350 for a standard tandem flight including pickup, the ride to launch, and basic video. Add-ons like better cameras or longer flights push it higher.

Tip: book a morning slot for smoother air and fewer crowds. Skip any super-cheap options that feel sketchy on safety briefings; a good operator will spend time making sure you're comfortable. If you're even mildly afraid of heights, the views still make it worth it for most people once you're actually flying.
