Kirstenbosch is a large, beautifully maintained botanical garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Expect wide lawns, excellent paths, dramatic mountain views, and a mix of formal beds and natural fynbos. The tree canopy walk is popular but the real pleasure is simply wandering: it's peaceful, well signed, and big enough that you can escape crowds. Most visitors spend 2–4 hours. It's easy to combine with a drive over Constantia Nek or a picnic. The garden is stroller-friendly and has decent cafés and toilets.
Best time is spring (September–November) when the fynbos is in flower and the weather is mild. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hotter and busier; mornings are far more pleasant. Winter offers fewer crowds and lower prices but can be wet and chilly. Expect to pay around $8–15 for adult entry depending on season; guided walks and the canopy walkway sometimes cost extra. A simple picnic or light lunch on site adds another $10–20 per person.
Honest tips: Bring your own water and a hat – shade is uneven and the sun is strong. Skip the formal tours unless you really want plant names; the garden is easy to explore on your own with the free map. Do rent a mountain bike if you're reasonably fit – cycling the outer contour paths gives a completely different and very enjoyable perspective of the place.
