The boats are usually small catamarans or larger tour vessels; you'll get decent commentary about the history of the waterfront and Table Bay. It's not a dramatic ocean adventure - more a pleasant, scenic loop that gives you a sense of the city's maritime side without committing a whole afternoon.

The best time is November to March when the southeaster wind is calmer and Table Mountain is less likely to be hidden in cloud. Summer sunsets are especially good if you can get an evening departure. Expect to pay around $15-45 per person depending on boat size, duration, and whether they add drinks or snacks. Cheaper daytime trips are fine; the premium sunset ones with a glass of wine are noticeably more enjoyable if your budget allows.
