Should You Do a Lagoon Tour in Venice?

A lagoon tour is one of the better day trips from Venice. You get on a boat, leave the crowds behind, and visit three small islands: Murano for glass-blowing demos, Burano for its colorful houses and lace, and sometimes Torcello for its ancient cathedral and peaceful atmosphere. The boat ride itself is pleasant, especially when the light is good. Expect a half-day to full-day commitment depending on whether they add Torcello and how long they stop on each island. It's not a quiet private experience — most tours carry 20-50 people — but it's still a nice break from central Venice and gives you a better sense of the wider lagoon.

The best time is spring (April-June) or early fall (September-October). Summers are hot, crowded, and the boats feel cramped; winter can be cold and windy but you'll have far fewer people. Expect to pay around $35-70 per person. Cheaper tours tend to be larger groups with shorter stops; higher prices usually mean smaller boats, better guides, or included extras like a glass demo.

Pick a tour that includes Torcello if you can — it's the least visited and most atmospheric. Skip the ones that promise a "lunch" unless it's clearly optional and not overpriced. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and don't expect deep history lessons; the value is mostly in seeing the islands and the boat ride across the lagoon.
