Lohagad is one of the easiest and most accessible forts within striking distance of Mumbai. Expect a gentle 2–3 hour uphill walk on a wide, well-used path that’s more staircase than scramble. The fort itself sits on a flat plateau with good views, old cannons, and enough space to wander without crowds on weekdays. It’s not a hardcore trek — it’s a solid half-day outing that combines light exercise, fresh air, and some history. From the base village you’ll climb steadily but never dangerously; most reasonably fit people manage it fine in trainers.
The best time is November to early March when the weather is cool and the hills are still green after the monsoon. Skip the monsoon peak (July–mid September) unless you specifically want the dramatic waterfalls — the path gets slippery and leeches appear. Expect to pay around ₹1800–3500 per person for a day trip including transport from Mumbai, basic veg lunch, and guide. Solo or with friends you can do it cheaper by taking local trains and shared taxis from Pune side, coming in under ₹800–1200 total.
Smart tip: go on a weekday — weekends turn the fort into a loud picnic ground. Bring your own decent snacks and at least two litres of water; the packaged “lunch” on most trips is forgettable. Skip the overpriced horse rides at the start; the walk is easy and you’ll feel better at the top.
