The Los Haitises boat tour is a full-day trip (usually 9–10 hours) that takes you west from Punta Cana by bus or van to the national park. You spend about two hours on a motorized boat gliding through mangrove channels, stopping at two limestone caves where you get out, walk around, and see stalactites and petroglyphs. After that you head to the natural pools at Caño Hondo for swimming and lunch. The scenery is genuinely pretty—thick jungle, birds, and quiet stretches of water—but the travel time from Punta Cana is long (2–2.5 hours each way) so the day feels full. It's a solid nature contrast to the beach-resort scene if you want a break from the sand.
Best time to go is December through April when the weather is driest and the sea crossing to the park is calmer. June to November brings more rain and the chance of rougher boat rides. Expect to pay around $110–$160 per person depending on whether you choose a small-group tour with better boats and guides or the cheaper mass-market option. Private tours run $450–$650 for up to six people.
Tip: pick the version that includes the natural pools and at least a basic lunch; the boat ride alone feels short for the travel time. Skip the add-on “hike” at Montaña Redonda if you’re short on time or energy—it’s scenic but adds another long drive and rarely feels worth it on the same day.
