Should You Do a Luau in Maui?

A Maui luau is a big outdoor Hawaiian dinner show with Polynesian dancing, fire twirling, and an imu ceremony where they pull a pig from an underground oven. Expect a buffet of kalua pork, poi, poke, grilled fish, and the usual sides. The show runs about 90 minutes after sunset and mixes hula, Tahitian, Samoan, and Maori numbers. It’s touristy by nature but still the easiest way to see a range of island dance styles in one evening. Crowds are large (150–400 people) so don’t expect an intimate cultural experience; think dinner theater with a Hawaiian theme.

Best time is April–October when the weather is driest and shows are least likely to be moved indoors. December–March can be rainy and some venues cancel more often. Expect to pay around $180–$280 per adult, $100–$160 for kids, including food, one or two drinks, and the show. Resort luaus tend to be pricier and slightly more polished; oceanfront ones add atmosphere but book up fastest.

Pick a mid-week show to avoid weekend crowds and choose one that still performs the fire knife dance (most do). Skip the add-on photo packages and overpriced lei upgrades—they’re rarely worth it. If you want something calmer, look for smaller “slack key guitar” shows instead of full luaus.
