Maipo Valley Vineyard Tour from Santiago

A half-day Maipo Valley tour is one of the easiest and most worthwhile day trips from Santiago. You'll visit three or four vineyards ranging from big historic estates with old cellars to smaller, modern operations. Expect a mix of short guided walks through vines or production areas, followed by seated tastings that usually include 3–5 wines plus some cheese, olives, or bread. The drive from central Santiago takes 45–90 minutes each way depending on traffic. Tours run rain or shine; most include comfortable transport and a guide who explains Chilean wine basics without being stuffy. It's touristy but still genuinely informative if you pick a group size under 12 people.

Best time is March to May (fall harvest season) when the vines turn red and many wineries offer extra tastings or events. Summer (Dec–Feb) is also pleasant but hotter and busier. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person for a standard group tour with pickup; private tours start closer to $200–$350. Book ones that include at least one premium winery and a proper sit-down tasting rather than just a quick pour at the counter.

Tip: Choose a tour that visits both a big name like Concha y Toro and a smaller producer so you get contrast; skip the ones that cram in five wineries in six hours—rushed tastings aren't fun. If you get motion sick on winding roads, take the morning departure so you're back before rush hour.
