Mayfield Falls is a real river hike where you scramble up a series of small waterfalls, swim in natural pools, and walk through lush jungle for about two hours. It’s more physical than Dunn’s River—expect slippery rocks, rope climbs, and guides helping you up small drops. The water stays cool and clear year-round. It feels far more local and less crowded than the big Montego Bay attractions, but it’s still a guided tourist activity with life vests and group pacing. From Montego Bay the drive takes roughly 90 minutes each way on winding roads.
Best time is December to April when it’s drier and the rivers run lower, making the rocks easier to grip. Expect to pay around $90–$170 per person depending on whether you go independently (admission plus taxi) or book a small-group tour that includes transport, lunch, and drinks. Independent is cheaper but requires negotiating a driver who’ll wait.
Tip: choose the standard river walk and skip any add-on “adventure package” with extra tubing or zip lines—they’re rarely worth it here. Wear water shoes with good grip and bring a dry bag for your phone. If you only have one excursion day, many people actually enjoy YS Falls more because it has bigger drops and easier access. Do Mayfield only if you specifically want the intimate, all-in-the-river experience.
