Molokini is a small, crescent-shaped volcanic crater off Maui’s southwest coast offering clear water and reliable snorkeling with lots of fish and occasional turtles. The boat ride is usually 45–60 minutes each way. Once there you’ll spend about an hour in the water inside the protected basin where depths range from 10 to 80 feet. Visibility is typically good but can drop after rough weather or when the boat traffic is heavy. The experience is snorkel-focused; most tours also stop at a second site (often “Turtle Town”) on the return. It’s a solid half-day trip but not remote wilderness—expect 50–150 other people in the water at peak times.
Best time is spring and early summer (April–July) when seas are calmer and visibility tends to be highest. Avoid winter months if you’re prone to seasickness; swells can make the crossing uncomfortable. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per adult depending on whether you choose a basic snorkel boat, a smaller semi-private trip, or one with breakfast and lunch included. Gear and instruction are provided.
Tip: pick a morning departure to beat the afternoon wind and chop. Skip the biggest “cattle boat” catamarans if you want more space in the water; smaller vessels with 30–50 passengers usually deliver a better experience even if they cost a bit more. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen—the stuff they lend you is often thick and messy.
