Molokini Snorkel in Maui: Worth It?

Molokini is a small crescent-shaped crater off Maui's southwest coast known for calm, clear water and reliable snorkeling. Expect to see hundreds of fish, occasional turtles, and sometimes reef sharks in the deeper sections. The boat ride takes 30-45 minutes each way. Once there, you'll jump in for 45-60 minutes of snorkeling along the inner wall where the water is usually 20-60 feet deep. It's a guided tour: most boats carry 20-50 people, provide snorkel gear and flotation devices, and include some food and drinks. The experience is solid but not remote wilderness—it's a popular spot that can feel busy when multiple boats are present.

Best time is spring and summer (April-September) when the ocean is calmer and visibility is often 80+ feet. Winter brings bigger swells that can cancel trips or make the crossing rough. Expect to pay around $120-200 per adult for a half-day trip, with premium small-boat or early departures at the higher end. Kids and online bookings usually get discounts.

Pick a morning departure to beat the afternoon wind and crowds. Skip the longest 5-6 hour tours if you just want snorkeling—most people are ready to head back after the second stop. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen; the provided stuff is often thick and messy.
