Maui offers some of the easiest and most rewarding snorkeling in Hawaii. Expect warm, clear water, vibrant reefs, and plenty of tropical fish—sometimes turtles and the occasional reef shark. Most boat tours last 3–4 hours and visit either Molokini Crater (a partially submerged volcanic crater with steep walls and lots of marine life) or shallower spots like Coral Gardens or Turtle Town. The experience is gentle: you jump in, float around for an hour or so with a guide nearby, then cruise back. It’s suitable for beginners and kids, though you’ll be sharing the water with 20–60 other people on bigger boats.
The best time is spring and summer (April–October) when the ocean is calmer and visibility is often 50–100 feet. Winter brings bigger swells, rougher rides, and more cancellations, though you can still go on protected days. Expect to pay around $80–$160 per person depending on whether you choose a basic morning trip, a smaller boat, or one with lunch and extra stops. Private or semi-private charters run higher.
Tip: Pick a smaller boat (under 30 passengers) if you want less crowding in the water and more time snorkeling. Skip the cheapest large-party tours if you hate feeling rushed or herded. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them—rental gear is usually average quality.
