Horseback Riding in Maui: What to Know

Expect a mix of open ranchland, tropical forest, and ocean views depending on which part of the island you choose. Most rides last 1.5–2.5 hours and move at a walking pace with occasional trots. You'll likely ride in a small group following a guide who points out native plants or distant whales in winter. The horses are generally calm and well-trained for visitors. It's a pleasant way to see terrain you can't reach by car, but it's not a thrilling gallop through surf—more like a relaxed moving picnic with a high center of gravity. Afternoon rides can be hot and buggy; morning ones are cooler and usually calmer for the horses.

The best time is April through October when it's drier. Winter (Nov–Mar) brings rain and mud, though you might see humpback whales from the trails. Expect to pay around $150–$250 per person for a standard ride including basic instruction and water. Longer or private options push toward the higher end. Add a few bucks for a tip if the guide was good—they work hard in the sun.

Pick a smaller ranch over the big commercial outfits if you want more personal attention and less waiting around. Skip any “sunset dinner ride” if you’re not a strong rider; the return leg in fading light can get sketchy on uneven ground. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes even if it’s hot. And don’t forget sunscreen—there’s zero shade on some trails.
