This is a solid half-day hike if you want to get out of Munich without going far. You walk about 3 miles uphill on the old pilgrim route (Way of St. James) from Herrsching on the Ammersee, climbing through woods to the Benedictine monastery at Andechs. Expect a working monastery with a striking baroque church, a working brewery, and a big beer garden where locals and tourists drink the monks’ beer and eat hearty Bavarian food. The hike back via a different lakeside trail is easier and pretty. Total round-trip is 6–8 miles and 4–6 hours depending on how long you linger at the top. It’s not wilderness—paths are well signed and busy on weekends—but it feels properly outdoors.
Best time is late spring through early fall. May–June has wildflowers and fewer crowds; September–early October gives golden light and perfect temperatures. Skip winter unless you specifically want to hike in snow. Expect to pay around $80–$300 per person: a basic self-guided trip with train, boat, and beer costs under $100, while a private guided hike with food and transport runs $250+.
Smart pick: do the full hike up and take the bus back if your legs are tired. Skip the guided “beer experience” if you just want a quiet walk—most people are happier buying their own Weisswurst and beer in the garden. Bring cash for the monastery shop and go mid-week if you can.
